SS Part-Rohm Inscription Dagger By Herder

Owner's SS membership Number, '34 636', to Blade

SS part-Rohm dedicated dagger for sale made by Herder, Solingen. The 1933 pattern, 'Part Röhm,' SS dagger retains a black ebony grip with nickel-silver mounts throughout (lower crossguard stamped with a 'I'. The grip with the fine enamel SS Runes eye, along with nickle-silver eagle/swastika. The blade with the SS motto to the obverse, along with the 'part-Röhm' dedication to the reverse, along with the Herder, Solingen cartouche. The Ernst Rohm name completely removed, but the 'In herzliche kameradenschaft....' clear.

The scabbard with good early anodised scabbard and nickel-silver mounts. The dagger still retaining its leather hanger with nickle-silver fittings.

Condition report: Ebony dagger grip in excellent condition with a near perfect fit to the solid nickel-silver upper and lower crossguards. The grip with fine enamel Runes eye, and nickel-silver eagle/swastika. The grip with excellent fit to the upper and lower crossguards, beautifully fitted and free from any unsightly gaps. The blade in very good condition towards excellent condition, with most of the polish and crossgrain still visible.The 'Meine Ehre Heisst Treue' is  fine and clear. To the top right of the blade, just by the lower crossguard, is the original owner's SS membership number '34 636'. The reverse of the blade showing more use, primarily from the removal of the Ernst Rohm name. Little polish and crossgrain left. The 'In herzliche kameradeschaft...' dedication clear, going thin towards the end of the word '...schaft'. The Herder cartouche clear and unmolested.

 The anodised dagger scabbard with much of the fine black anodising remaining in place (95%). A few  small pin point rust blisters here and there. Varnish covering now gone. The solid nickel-silver dagger mounts are in good condition, with all screws present. The bottom ball is dented, with the typical associated split to the base. The black leather hanging strap in used condition, but the leather remaining supple.

Note: Just 9,900 Ernst Rohm dedication SS daggers were allocated for distribution to authorised recipients. Following the purge of Röhm in 1934, (the legendary 'night of the long knives'), Rohm dedications were removed from all daggers under Himmler's instruction. Most dedications were completely removed, however, a small number just had the Ernst Rohm name removed (as per this example). It has long been a point of debate, if the reason for keeping a part of the incription showed some loyalty to Rohm, and at the same time adhering to Himmler's orders. 

Provenance: Acquired from the North England-based dealer/collectr, Harvey Riley, at the beginning of the 1980s. Remaining in the same collection until consigned to ULRIC of ENGLAND. According to the consigner, the dagger was purchased privately by Riley, from the soldier that brought the dagger back as war booty in 1945. This dagger has remained unresearched by the consigner, and we do not currently know the identity of SS member '34 636'.
